Mass Grave Mapping
From July 18th to August 12th, 2021, Colin Miazga, Alastair McClymont, and Paul Bauman will be carrying out geophysical investigations in support of a documentary movie with a working title of “The Resistance Project.” We will be investigating sites of Jewish resistance during the Holocaust in Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland. “Resistance” will include not only armed resistance, but unarmed resistance as well. We will be exploring for escape tunnels, hiding places (malinas), and hidden archives.
Listen to Paul deliver the final lecture in the University of Calgary Gallagher Colloquium Series:
"Searching for Water in Humanitarian Crises"
In the marginal landscapes where refugee camps are usually sited, groundwater is often the only practical source of water for drinking, cooking, and sanitation, and a lack of access to adequate water supplies is directly tied to increasing occurrences of cholera, dysentery, hepatitis, trachoma, and other diseases. In this talk, Mr. Paul Bauman, Principal Geophysicist, BGC Engineering Inc., will lead you on the geophysical search and then the discovery of water in a few of the refugee camps and conflict zones in East Africa. In each of these settings, the cause of human displacement is distinct, the geology and hydrogeology vary, the landscapes are strikingly different, but the need for water is equally desperate.
